It is an independent, foundation-owned university with a broad international network of contacts and well-established collaboration with industry. Chalmers has two centrally located campuses in Gothenburg, with a creative, international atmosphere and committed faculty.
Chalmers bears the name of William Chalmers, director of the Swedish East India Company who dedicated a large part of his estate to found an "Industrial School", which opened in 1829 with ten students. Industry soon became an integral part of the school's curriculum and from the very outset, the teaching had a scientific foundation, something that was very unusual at the time. Chalmers was incorporated into the state university system in 1937 and became an independent foundation in 1994.
